In terms of performance, the Gardena star roller system proves to be very effective, but remember that it always depends on the circumstances. This tool is in fact perfect for soft soils and for cutting the roots of young and not too high weeds, but it has difficulty with tough roots and hard or clayey soils. It is natural that this is the case, considering that we are talking about a product with its limits anyway.
As for the blade, you have the possibility to adjust it by loosening and tightening the appropriate bolts, so as to adapt it to every need. Both the blade and the toothed wheel are made of galvanized steel, therefore able to withstand corrosion optimally. I have tried it and I can guarantee you that the soft crust is broken without problems, and that the blade does its job well.
How to use the manual weeder?
As I anticipated, the use of this tool is almost disconcerting ease. All you have to do is place the toothed roller on the ground, press lightly on the handle and push it back and forth, allowing it to crush the surface layer of the soil. While you are advancing, remember to tilt the stick: in this way you will allow the weeder blade to penetrate a couple of centimeters into the ground, so as to cut the roots of the weeds at the base.
The blade is always preceded by the toothed wheel, which has the task of aerating the earth and at the same time facilitating the work for the hoe. In summary, it allows you to make it softer, so as to simplify the passage in depth of the blade. This is undoubtedly one of the main advantages, if you make a direct comparison with the simple weeder. In that case, in fact, the hardness of the ground will force you to make much more effort when using the blade, precisely because of the absence of the toothed roller.
In reality, the wheel also has a second task: it turns into a sort of “viewfinder”, which allows you to proceed with extreme precision on the ground. This is a feature that I consider fundamental, especially when you are forced to move between the very narrow rows of classic small vegetable gardens. In other words, by acting as a guide, the wheel allows you to avoid accidentally damaging the plants in your crop.

When to use this 2-in-1 tool?
If the soil is not very large, then the manual weeder can become a very valuable companion.
My advice is to use it if you have a small vegetable garden or a small size garden, because otherwise – being a manual tool anyway – you will have a hard time pushing it for long distances. Of course you will not be able to use it on clayey soils or on skeletons not yet worked with spade and the hoe, because the small roller would never be able to break too hard clods. Instead, you will not have any kind of problem with sandy or medium-textured soils, that is those composed largely of sand and silt.
At the same time, the weeder blade also has its limitations. Specifically, despite being sharp, it loses its effectiveness when it has to “collide” with medium-strong roots and with weeds that are already fully developed. Precisely for this reason, the weeder should be used at least twice a month, and within 2 weeks of sowing and transplanting. Doing so will make life easier for the tool, because you will give it the opportunity to effectively cut young weeds.
To summarize, the tool is suitable for soils that are already moved and cultivated, and not for clayey soils, uncultivated or with a hard mixture. It is also not effective if the weeds have already grown very tall, due to their roots being too strong. Even if it is not the great protagonist of this tool, the handle still plays a fundamental role. For one thing, it’s good to keep it long enough, as otherwise you could strain your back, especially if you’re going to use it for a prolonged period of time without breaks. My advice is to opt for a handle that is at least 1.5 meters long, but of course it all depends on your height.
Secondly, the best handles have an ergonomic grip and shape, so as to simplify the use of the roller with blade. Remember that the clod breakers require the purchase of a stick produced by the same company, for a question of compatibility of the attachments. Depending on the model, therefore, you may have more options available, with handles of different lengths and shapes.
As for the materials, the handles are usually made of wood or aluminum, with plastic coating. Finally, consider that in some cases you can even buy a telescopic handle, therefore extendable.
2. Working width
There are not many clod breakers of this type on sale, but you may notice some models with a different working width. This value simply indicates the width of the weeder blade and the roller, and it is important for a reason: it must be compatible with the space between the rows of vegetables. In summary, if it is too large you will not be able to use it and you will risk damaging good plants. In reality this value is almost always equal to 15 centimeters: that is enough to make it compatible with all situations.
3. Blade and roller materials
The blade and roller are almost always made of galvanized steel, which guarantees the components of the tool a certain hardness and excellent resistance to corrosion and acids. In addition, steel is excellent in terms of penetration force into the earth, but always remember that a manual weeder breaker is only suitable for soft and already worked soils.
4. Single or combined use?
Know that, in essence, this tool is nothing more than a manual scarifier roller with the addition of a weeder blade. This blade can also be unscrewed or raised, so that you can only use the sprocket. Of course, the real effectiveness lies precisely in the combined use of the roller+ blade system, but this will not prevent you from doing without the second when you don’t need it (but not the first).
